Puffing Billy departs from Belgrave Station in Melbourne's outer eastern foothills, approximately 40 kilometres from Flinders Street Station. Because ticket desks strictly close 30 minutes before train departure, plan to arrive at the station at least 60 minutes beforehand. This gives you time for ticket collection, amenities, and boarding without rushing.

If you prefer not to navigate weekend track maintenance, freeway traffic, or Belgrave station parking, all-inclusive day tours pick you up directly from central Melbourne hotels. Packages bundle reserved steam train tickets with Phillip Island or Dandenong Ranges touring.
Metro Train from Melbourne
The Metro train is the most popular, sustainable way to reach Belgrave without a car.
- Line: Belgrave Line (departs Flinders Street, Southern Cross, Melbourne Central, and Richmond).
- Terminus: Take a train terminating at Belgrave. Do not board trains terminating early at Ringwood, Upper Ferntree Gully, or Lilydale.
- Travel Time: Typical scheduled transit time is around 65 to 75 minutes, depending on express sections through Richmond and Box Hill. Because rail delays and schedule adjustments can occur, treat this as an estimate and verify live departures using the PTV app.
- Ticketing: Travel requires a valid Myki card or digital Mobile Myki (Google Wallet on Android). Physical cards must be purchased and loaded before boarding in the city.

Blue Line Walking Path
When your Metro train arrives at Belgrave terminus:
Exit the Metro platform at Belgrave and turn right into the station car park area. Follow the distinctive blue line painted on the pavement. This clearly signposted accessible path leads directly from the Metro platform, under the rail bridge, and up to the heritage Puffing Billy ticket desk and platform gates.
Realistic walking buffer: While marketing material advertises a "short 2-minute walk," moving an entire family with prams, toddlers, and bags from the Metro platform, touching off Myki barriers, and reaching the ticket counter realistically takes 10 to 15 minutes. Do not plan around a 2-minute connection.

Public Transport Fares (1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027 promotional period (checked October 2026))
Metropolitan Melbourne operates an integrated Zone 1+2 ticketing structure administered by Transport Victoria:
| Fare Type | Full Fare (Adult) | Concession Fare | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 1+2 2-Hour Fare | $2.85 | $1.43 | Valid for unlimited train, tram, and bus travel within Zones 1 and 2 for 2 hours from touch-on. |
| Zone 1+2 Daily Cap (Weekdays) | $5.70 | $2.85 | Daily maximum charge for metropolitan travel across a standard weekday. |
| Weekend & Public Holiday Daily Cap | $4.00 | $2.00 | Discounted all-day cap for metropolitan weekend travel to Belgrave. |
Metro transit fares are separate from Puffing Billy excursion tickets. Travellers must have an active physical Myki card or digital Mobile Myki (Android) with sufficient funds before boarding at Flinders Street or Southern Cross.
Driving & Traffic
Driving from central Melbourne takes approximately 50 to 75 minutes under light conditions via the M1 Monash Freeway, exiting at Ferntree Gully Road or Wellington Road toward Burwood Highway / Belgrave-Gembrook Road.
- Weekend Inbound/Outbound Peak: The Monash Freeway and Burwood Highway experience heavy congestion on sunny Saturday and Sunday mornings. Add a 25-minute buffer to GPS estimates.
- Mountain Roads: The final 10 kilometres past Upper Ferntree Gully involve curving, undivided roads with occasional cyclist traffic. Drive with caution in wet or foggy conditions.
- Address for GPS Navigation: 1 Old Monbulk Road, Belgrave VIC 3160 (Belgrave Station main entrance).
Before driving, review our Parking & Station Access Guide for the unresolved Belgrave commuter parking conflict and council parking fee rules.

Bus 695 Warning
Some third-party blogs suggest taking public bus Route 695 from Belgrave station to Emerald township and walking down to Lakeside station.
While Cardinia Shire Council notes bus 695 connects Belgrave with Emerald, the walk from the bus stop on Belgrave-Gembrook Road down into Emerald Lake Park involves an unverified, steep road descent with no dedicated footpath along sections. Furthermore, bus frequencies on weekends are limited. We do not recommend relying on Bus 695 to meet a booked Puffing Billy train at Lakeside. If your excursion departs from Lakeside, travel by private vehicle or taxi.
Disruptions & Travel Alerts
Metropolitan Melbourne's rail network frequently conducts level crossing removal and track maintenance works on weekends.
When maintenance occurs, buses replace trains between Ringwood and Belgrave or Camberwell and Box Hill, easily adding 30 to 45 minutes to transit times.
- Check the PTV disruptions page or app before setting off from your hotel or home.
